Hobart City Council has deferred a decision on building heights after sensational intervention by State Planning Minister Roger Jaensch. The council was on Monday night about to debate whether to adopt a 60m height limit in zone one of the CBD, with height restrictions varying across the city, when Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds read out a letter from Mr Jaensch. Hobart the only capital city seeing dwelling price growth: Sydney dwelling prices fell another 1% and they have now fallen 13.2% from their July 2017 high, which is their worst fall since the early 1980s recession. Melbourne prices fell another 1% too and are down 9.6% from their November 2017 high, which is their worst fall since the early 1990s recession. Perth prices fell another 1.5% and are now down 17.8% from their 2014 high and Darwin prices fell another 1.7% and are now down 27% from their 2014 high. Prices also fell slightly in Brisbane (-0.3%) and Canberra (-0.2%) and were flat in Adelaide with Hobart the only city to see a rise (+0.8%). Property Observer

The four Greater Hobart mayors have written to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten asking for a meeting to discuss how Labor will improve on any City Deal arrangements. Labor has been heavily critical of the Hobart City Deal since it was signed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison last weekend. HOBART home values are still running hotter than any other capital city. The latest Home Value Index from CoreLogic revealed a 7.2 per cent annual median price growth in the southernmost capital city, with the next best results recorded in Canberra with its 3.4 per cent uptick. Five of the eight cities posted negative results with the most extreme drops found in the largest capitals: -10.4 per cent in Sydney and -9.1 per cent in Melbourne. NEWS

The start of March brings some positive news for Australia’s property market, with building approvals bouncing back, while the pace of house price decline eased slightly over the month. The rise in home building permits marks the first time since September the ABS figures have improved. Despite the pace of decline slowing in February, house prices in six of the eight capital cities fell, while Sydney’s housing market moved into double digit annual declines for the first time since the 1980s.
